Middleman Productions is the platform for the work of writer and filmmaker Mikey Murray. We are dedicated to the production of high quality drama films on low budgets.

MIKEY MURRAY BIOGRAPHY

Mikey is a multi-award winning working-class filmmaker who was born and raised in Scotland.  He studied Directing and Screenwriting in UCLA's MFA program after winning a $40,000 scholarship from television producer, David Jacobs (Dallas).  He has worked as a production and acquisitions intern at New Line Cinema's independent film arm under exec producers Mark Ordesky (The Lord of the Rings) and Guy Stodel. He has been mentored by Emmy Award nominated writer/director Christopher Monger and in 2014 he was selected by Ffilm Cymru Wales for their Net.Work Director’s Lab where he developed his work with Oscar nominated writer/director Lenny Abrahamson. His debut feature film, Mind-set (2022) won Best UK Feature Film at Manchester International Film Festival in 2022 and Mikey was longlisted for Best Debut Director at the British Independent Film Awards.

SCREENWRITER

Mikey won a Scottish BAFTA award for Best First Time Writer in 2008 and in 2009 his feature screenplay, ‘Across the Water’ placed as a runner-up in the British Feature Screenplay Competition; judged by Alan Parker and Kenneth Branagh. He has sold options on feature film scripts in both the UK and the US and he has supported In Motion Theatre Company's 'Beyond the Headlines' online monologue event as script editor on works performed by high profile Scottish actors such as Alan Cumming and Robin Laing.

DIRECTOR

Mikey is a versatile drama director and in 2017, his short film, ‘Natalie', was funded by the BFI Net.Work scheme and was nominated for Best Short Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. It went on to win Best Short Film at the Fargo Moorhead LGBT Film Festival in 2018 and festival director Raymond Rea commented: "Murray's film exhibits a clear understanding of the Trans experience combined with the force of purely cinematic language. Specifically the use of the eyes, the look, and the gesture". Mikey has directed prestigious UK acting talents such as Kate Dickie, Jason Isaacs, David Hayman, Steve Oram and Julia Deakin and was longlisted for BIFA's debut director award in 2022 for debut feature film, Mind-Set.

PRODUCER

As a festival director for Indie-Lincs IFF and having programmed for several film festivals such as Slamdance and Aesthetica, Mikey has a firm understanding of the film industry and the festival marketplace. He has helped to produce films by other writer/directors to international recognition and has several film festival accolades as a producer.  In particular, 'Turn On' (2014) written and directed by Mat Owen premiered at the Sidewalk Film Festival in Alabama, before winning the Philip K. Dick Science Fiction Film Festival in New York and receiving a screening as a featurette before the BFI re-release of Bladerunner in London. Mikey is wholly interested in producing films on low-budgets and knows how to get the best out of limited resources. His award-winning debut feature film 'Mind-set', which he also produced, has been lauded as an 'Indie gem', by top film critics such as Mark Kermode and Peter Bradshaw and it embodies the micro-budget filmmaking ethic.
